Songs with rests can be a new form of ambience; one of the biggest differences between Western and Japanese music is the use of rests. While the rhythm of Western music is based on beats, which are basically regular intervals of time that are never interrupted, Japanese music expresses itself with its own unique "ma" or irregular intervals of time. Hogaku also has Western rhythms as its foundation, but is said to have a concept of time that expands and contracts according to the "synchronisation of breath," rather than just the mathematical regularity of time as in Western music.
